STANFORD, Calif. (May 2, 2019) - Late Thursday evening three Northern Arizona University long distance runners participated in the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford University at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Geordie Beamish, Tyler Day and Luis Grijalva each raced in the Men's 5000m Run with the trio all setting new personal records in that event.
Stanford's Grant Fisher was the NCAA Division I West Outdoor leader in the Men's 5000m Run with a time of 13:29.52 set at the Cardinal Classic on April 19th heading into Thursday. After Thursday Day now leads Division I in the 5000m heading into conference championships next week. Day was the first Lumberjack to cross the finish line in the 5000m Run at 13:25.06 to earn a 13th-place finish. He saw a huge improvement over his previous personal best of 13:40.22 set at the Stanford Invitational last outdoor season.
Day also currently owns the fifth best time in the 10,000m Run in NCAA Division I at 28:24.94.
Beamish finished in 13:31.58, well over a 20-second improvement on his previous 13:53.59 PR set at the 2017 Stanford Invitational. Beamish would come in 17th-place and now has the fourth best time in the 5000m in the country.
In 19th-place Grijalva rounded out the finishers for NAU at 13:37.11; Grijalva's previous PR was a 13:49.75 performance at last year's Stanford Invitational as well.
Prior to Thursday night Theo Quax and Brodey Hasty were the Big Sky Conference leaders in the Men's 5000m Run. Day, Beamish and Grijalva now own the top three spots at the time of publication. With Outdoor Championships less than a week away it is looking like NAU will have some depth in that event.
The entire Lumberjack outdoor track and field team will be back for Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships starting on May 8th and running until Saturday, May 11th.
