AUSTIN, Texas (June 7, 2019) - Geordie Beamish and
Luis Grijalva each earned Second Team All-American honors after competing in the Men's 5k Final at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers in Austin, Texas on Friday evening. The pair was joined by true freshman
Brodey Hasty who would secure a spot on the Honorable Mentions list for his performance.Â
Beamish was the first 'Jack to finish the 5k coming in at 14:13.18 to take 10th-place. Grijalva was not far behind as he ended the race in 14:20.86, with Hasty at just about five seconds behind at 14:25.54.Â
Much like they have all season the Lumberjacks stayed patient and made strategical moves that allowed all three runners to be put in competitive positions and keep pace with some of the country's best distance runners. With three laps left it was anyone's race as all three NAU men were within less than a second of the lead. Before the bell rang for the final lap Beamish was NAU's lead runner, posting a final lap time at 58.16 seconds.
NAU ended the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships with three team points which were earned off of
Tyler Day's sixth-place finish in the 10k Final race on Wednesday.
The 'Jacks will be leaving Austin with three All-Americans (Day - 10k, Grijalva & Beamish -5k) and now a sophomore in Hasty who has experience at the national level early in his collegiate career. The 5k trio will each be returning to NAU next season, with Day as well minus the XC season.
