FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (August 4, 2019) - Northern Arizona University long distance runner
Tyler Day will be competing in the Men's 5k Final at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on August 6th with a start time of approximately 6:45 P.M (MST).
The
2019 Pan American Games, officially theÂ
XVIII Pan American Games and commonly known as theÂ
Lima 2019 Pan-Am Games, is a multi-sport event governed by the PanAm Sports Organization, being held in Lima from July 26 to August 11, 2019, with preliminary rounds in certain events having begun on July 24, 2019. The Men's 5k Final will be held at the Estadio Nacional del Peru.
After a long and convoluted selection process it is official that Day will be one of two male athletes to represent the United States in the 5k Final. Initially Day was told he would be racing in the Pan American Games. However, after just a few days the offer was retracted due to a selection process that flipped between which times would qualify for the event. Late in July Day was called yet again and told that the Games would revert back to the initial selection process, allowing him to make the trip south of the border to Peru.
"This was a crazy process," said Day. "I am honored to represent Team USA and my school on the international level. The switching between which times could or could not qualify was confusing, but ultimately it is something I'm looking forward to and I can't wait to compete."
This past spring Day raced in the Men's 5k at the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round. In early May he set a new PR in the 5k with a time of 13:25.06, which was the top time in the country throughout the 2019 outdoor season.
The race will feature 14 runners from 10 countries. Josef Tessema will be the other American to lace it up in Lima.Â
