NAU Women’s Soccer Look to Snap Losing Streak

Lumberjacks take on the Lobos

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 13) – Northern Arizona University's women's soccer team (2-2-1) is looking to get back in the win column as they travel to the University of New Mexico (2-3) this Sunday, kicking off at 12 p.m.
 
The last time Northern Arizona played New Mexico was Sept. 12, 2017. The all-time record is even at 1-1-1.
 
Last weekend, Northern Arizona went to the Golden State, playing against No.3 USC and the University of the Pacific, finding their first two losses of the season.
 
The Lumberjacks were able to shutout the Trojans during the first half of the game on Fri., Sept. 6. Taryn Benham, sophomore goalkeeper, recorded three total saves during the first half. However, USC's Penelope Hocking, was able to score at the very beginning of the second half at 45:37. The Trojans continued to score two more goals, ending the game 0-3.
 
Against Pacific, sophomore Madison Montgomery was able to score early on in the first half. Montgomery went one-on-one against the goalie, sneaking the ball under her legs and hitting the back of the net at the 16thminute of the game. NAU also shut out Pacific during the first half, but the Tigers were able to come back and win during the second half, scoring two goals, earning a 2-1 win over the 'Jacks.
 
As they head to Albuquerque, Northern Arizona is going in with eight goals scored compared to UNM's four. Junior Paige Maling and Montgomery lead the team both with three. Freshman Lexy Aguilar and junior Kylie Kapustka are tied with one goal.

University of New Mexico is starting out their 2019 season with an overall record of 2-3. They have found both of their wins against No.22 Texas Tech and at Portland State University.
 
UNM scores about 0.80 goals per game, with four total goals and 62 shot attempts, 23 being on-goal. 
 
Alesia Garcia leads the Lobos in stats. During her five games of play, Garcia scored two goals, the most on the team. She scored the single goal-winning the game against Texas Tech on Aug. 26. Garcia taken a total of 13 shots with five on-goal, making her on-goal shooting percentage 0.38. 
 
Two other players, Leilani Baker and Jessie Hix are tied for second in goals with one. Both of them have played in five games, earning a total of two points. Hix scored the game winning goal against Portland State on Sept. 8, helping her team win 2-1 over the Vikings.
 
For the week of Aug. 26, the Lobos' senior goalkeeper, Emily Johnson, earned the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors. She faced the Texas Tech, shutting them out despite the 22 shots taken with seven being on-goal. Out of her nine total saves, seven were during this game.
