NAU Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Bedford Cup Tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 29, 2019) – Four players from Northern Arizona University men's tennis team wrapped up their three-day Bedford Cup tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. today.Alexander Groves, Chris Steele, David Nguyen and Mikael Purne all participated at the tournament.
 
Blue Draw
Steele and Groves were placed into the Blue Draw during the singles matches. Steele placed against Northern Colorado's Kyle Pease, falling 6-1 and 6-1 during the first two sets. After settling into the consolation, Steele received a bye and then played against NMSU's Jordy Visser. Visser swept Steele 6-1 and 6-3 in the first two sets, winning the match. 
 
Groves also fell into the consolation match bracket after playing Montana's Ed Pudney to three sets, winning the first 4-6 and then falling 6-3 and 6-2. Groves then played to three sets against Weber State's Paul Ohde, going 6-2, 1-6 and 1-0 (7).
 
Groves went into the second consolation bracket to play against BYU's Kobe Tran, winning that both sets 6-3. Groves ultimately fell to Montana's Ludvig Hallgren 7-6(1) and then 10(8).
 
Silver Draw
Nguyen and Purne placed into the silver draw of the singles match. Nguyen received a bye for the first match. In the second, he fell to Southern Utah's Jose Ortega, going 7-6 and 6-4.
 
Purne fell into the consolation match after playing Northern Colorado's Alex Exsted 6-4 and 6-2. In the second match, he played BYU's Garret Vincent, who won 6-2 and 6-4.
 
Nguyen won the second consolation bracket facing Air Force's Denali Kitayama. Nguyen won against AF in three sets, going 3-6, 6-1 and 1-0. He went on to play against SUU's Conor Tordoff in a three set tie-breaker: 3-6, 7-5 and breaking the tie with 10-6. 
 
Doubles Draw
Nguyen and Purne played against Air Force's Galvin and Ihrig, going 2-6. 
 
Steele and Groves faced Northern Colorado's Kenzslers and Pudney. Pudney and Kenzslers took the game, winning 6-4. 
 
The duo went into the consolation bracket, going 6-3 to win against both BYU/Weber and Abliene Christian University.
 
The Lumberjacks will head to the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. running from Saturday, October 5 through Wednesday October 9.
