TUCSON, Ariz. (January 19, 2020) – Northern Arizona's men's tennis fell to the Arizona Wildcats today with a tally of 1-6.
Daniel Dillon was the sole scorer for the 'Jacks in the match.
"I thought we came up with a good energy in doubles and had a chance," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "We need to work on executing better."
In the doubles matches, pair
Alex Groves and
Chris Steele competed against Arizona's Igor Karpovets and Filip Malbasic on court two. The Wildcat dup finished first, ending the rally with a 2-6 set score, and gaining a leg up on the 'Jacks.
The Wildcats went onto clinch the second doubles match on the first court, where
Joachim Schaefer played Arizona's Alejandro Reguant and Nick Lagacu, ending 2-6.
On court three, Lumberjacks
Eban Straker-Meads and
Facundo Tumosa played hard against Arizona's Stewart Block and Jonas Ziverts, but did not complete their 3-5 set.
In singles, Steele and Reguant finished on their courts first, ending with set scores of 1-6 and 0-6. Following shortly after, Schaefer and Lagacu completed their rally with the same set scores of 1-6 and 0-6.
Finishing third, Groves lost the first set to Karpovets 0-6, but came back to fight in the second, falling short, 3-6. Straker-Meads found a similar set score in his first against Malbasic of 3-6, but fell short in the next set, 1-6.
Wrapping up a three-set victory as the last finish, Dillon dominated in the first set, taking a 6-2 lead into the second, where Arizona's Connor Olsen took a 6-2 win, tying the set score 1-1. To win, Dillon finished the third set 10-7.
The Lumberjacks will be back tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for another game in Tucson against the University of California, Riverside. The Highlanders are 3-0 on the spring season, sweeping both Ottawa University and Arizona Christian University 7-0, and winning 4-3 over Grand Canyon University.
