USTFCCCAÂ Press Release
NEW ORLEANS, La. (January 28, 2020) - Northern Arizona University men's long distance runner
Tyler Day became the first Lumberjack in program history to be named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Indoor National Athlete of the Week in NCAA Division I announced by the association early Tuesday morning.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors also play a role in the decision.
Day shattered the American collegiate record for the indoor 5K as he went 13:16.95 at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic last Friday evening. In doing so, Day beat former Oregon Duck Galen Rupp's time of 13:18.2. He knocked nearly nine seconds off of his own previous best, which he set last May at the Payton Jordan Invitational. The Gilbert, Ariz., native also now owns the NAU school record and the Big Sky Conference record in the indoor 5K.
Northern Arizona is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation on the men's side according to the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll released on Monday. NAU indoor track & field will return to the Skydome on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 for the Mountain T's Invitational.
