FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (July 1, 2020) – During his final season in the spring of 2019,
Tim Handel firmly cemented himself as the greatest player in Northern Arizona men's tennis history. Already with two Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player awards, Handel captured a third and qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship as a senior.
The three-time Big Sky MVP posted a dominating 21-3 singles record, all at the No. 1 spot in the Lumberjack lineup, in 2019 and led NAU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. At the head of the Lumberjacks' conference championship team, Handel concluded the season by becoming the first Lumberjack to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship. Handel was the first Big Sky player to appear in the Singles tournament since 2006 and just the 11th conference player ever dating back to 1980. He finished his senior year ranked 73rd in the country.
Handel joins NAU Athletics for Lumberjack Flashback this week in the fifth episode of the summer-long video series looking back at top moments and individual performances from the past decade.
