NAU Men’s Tennis Set for Final Match Against Grand Canyon on Saturday

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 22, 2021) –
Northern Arizona men's tennis will travel to Phoenix for its final regular season match of the spring against Grand Canyon University this Saturday, April 24 at 11 a.m. MST.

Most recently, the Lumberjacks faced the Lopes in the Aquatic and Tennis facility on Jan. 30, 2020. NAU took a 5-2 win out from underneath GCU, earning the doubles point and four singles court victories.

Chris Steele and Alex Groves, in their doubles match, beat Valentin Lang and Freddie Grant 6-2 on No. 2, while Daniel Dillon and Joachim Schaefer won the No. 3 court 6-2 over David Weber and Justin Cvitanovic. 

Eban Straker-Meads, Steele, Groves, and Dillon all added four more points to the final tally after winning their singles matches. 

In this current spring season, the Lopes are 5-12, earning their first win over NAU's Big Sky opponent, Sacramento State, 4-2. Similarly, NAU had its initial victory over the Hornets of 4-3. 

GCU found its other four wins against Chicago State (6-1), New Mexico State (5-2), Seattle University (7-0) and UC Riverside (6-1). 

Northern Arizona, who holds a 6-7 season record, also had a victory over Seattle, tallying a 6-1 final score to the Redhawks. The Lumberjacks went on a three-game winning streak afterward, conquering Idaho State (6-1), Weber State (6-1) and Air Force (4-3). 

Upon completion of this match against GCU, NAU will head to the Big Sky Championship, beginning May 1. With the three league wins, the 'Jacks will enter into the conference championship as the No. 1 seed in the South Division and play against the No. 2 seed of the North.
