BOZEMAN, Mont. (February 25, 2022) - Northern Arizona dominated the day with eight podium performances, including four gold medal finishes, and saw 22 athletes qualify for event finals; NAU also set two Big Sky Championship records, two Brick Breeden Fieldhouse records and a new school record in the women's 60-meter dash.
After day two of competition, the Lumberjack men rank first overall with 63 points and the NAU women hold second with 41 points, behind Idaho State (44).
The Lumberjacks swept the men's and women's 5000-meter with Drew Bosley placing first with a meet record of 14:05.96, Ryan Raff (14:28.32) finishing third, Corey Gorgas (14:29.48) in fourth, Jack Shea (14:32.84) in fifth, and Aldo Marquez (14:44.58) grabbing eighth for a total of 26 points in the event.
Meanwhile, Jessa Hanson (16:47.34) earned bronze in the women's 5K, while Jesselyn Bries (16:53.23) and Delaney Rasmussen (17:07.19) respectively finished fourth and sixth to pick up 14 team points.
In the women's 60-meter preliminary race, Alyssa Colbert set a new NAU record as well as a Big Sky Championship meet record and a facility record of 7.32, respectively breaking Isatu Fofanah of Northern Arizona, and Gerone Black of Portland State previous times of 7.36 and Christian White's time of 7.45; Synfanie Crudder (7.60) snuck into the women's final as well, while David Dunalp (6.80) and Kyle Smith (6.91) advanced on the men's side.
The Lumberjack men and women also dominated the distance medley relays, as NAU men Nico Young, Tyson Givens, Theo Quax and Abdihamid Nur set an arena record of 9:50.86 to finish atop the Big Sky podium, and Elise Stearns, Bryn Morley, Melanie Loff, and Annika Reiss earned ten points for the women (11:51.30).
In Friday's field events, the men tallied 27 points between the long jump and weight throw while the women scored 13 in the shot put.
Mitchell Effing grabbed gold in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.41m while Jack Normand took eighth (7.00m).
The Lumberjack men also racked up points in men's weight throw as Will Beaudry (20.16m) placed second, Jacob Kaufman (18.80m) finished fourth, Jack Murphy (18.31m) took seventh and Parker Bays (17.90m) got eighth.
Meanwhile, Carly Watts earned silver in the women's shot put with 15.17 and Matilde Roe finished fourth (14.09m)
On the track, NAU advanced 22 athletes into event finals.
Madeline Wilson won her heat of the 60m hurdles with 8.73 while teammate Jyntry Rucker (8.94) qualified by time; Trenton Givens (8.03), Wil Peralta (8.13) and Tyson Givens (8.12) made the men's final as well.
Four Lumberjack women will appear in the 400-meter final, as Miracle Onyemaobi (55.77), LiNay Perry (56.97), Hannah Schmidt (57.20), and Kyairra Reigh (57.20) advanced from their respective heats.
Onyemaobi (24.96), Colbert (25.10), Crudder (25.27), Dunlap (21.76) and Smith (22.14) have a busy day on Saturday, as they are also set to compete in the women and men's 200-meter finals.
NAU will also have Quax (1:54.72), George Kusche (1:52.44), Loff (2:15.18), and Hannah Behunin (2:15.34) in the men and women's 800-meter finals.
Tomorrow, the Lumberjacks will compete in the women's weight throw, men's high jump and shot put, and the men's and women's triple jump, mile, 3K, and 4x400-meter relays; the day will begin with women's weight throw at 10:30 A.M. (MST).
