FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (May 24, 2022) – Northern Arizona will send a program record of 33 student-athletes, 17 men and 16 women, to compete at the 2022 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field West Regional Championship preliminary rounds in Fayetteville, Ark. on May 25-28. Men and women will alternate competition days with the men performing on Wednesday and Friday, while the women prepare for Thursday and Saturday. Live results, and a live stream will be made available daily by ESPN.
Day one of men's and women's competition primarily consists of preliminary races on the track with the exception of the 10,000-meter run which will be treated as a semifinal event with the top-12 finishers advancing to NCAA Championships; all field events will also be treated as semifinals, as a compilation the 12 best athletes to advance from their respective flights through finals will punch their tickets to Eugene.
The second day of men's and women's competition will feature quarterfinals on the track, as well as the semifinals for the 5,000-meter, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and 4x400-meter relay races; the top-five from each heat plus the next two best times advance in the 5K, while the top-three from each heat in addition to the next three best times head to steeplechase finals, and the top-three in each 4x400-meter relay heat plus the next three best times advance to NCAA Championships.
The top-three athletes from each heat plus the next best six times will advance to quarterfinals in all sprinting and hurdling events; these rules apply to the 800-meter run as well. Meanwhile, the 1500-meter prelims will take the top-five from each heat plus the next four best times into quarterfinals.
In order for a sprinter, hurdler, or 800-meter athlete to advance to event semifinals, the individual must finish within the top-three of their heat or post one of the next three best times. However, for the 1500-meter run, the top-five from each race in addition to the next two best times advance to Eugene for the semifinals.
Wednesday (Men)
Wednesday will begin with Jacob Kaufman (61.77m) and Jack Murphy (61.70m) competing in the men's hammer throw at 8 a.m. (PT), followed by Trevor Hook (64.18m) in the men's javelin at 12 p.m. (PT).
At 4 p.m. (PT) Mitchell Effing (7.59m) will start long jumping, while Trenton Givens (13.84) runs the men's 110-meter hurdles.
Meanwhile, at 4:30 p.m. (PT), Theo Quax (3:41.32), Caleb Easton (3:42.64), and George Kusche (3:37.31) will run the men's 1500-meter.
By no surprise, David Dunlap, who swept the 2022 Big Sky indoor and outdoor Men's Most Valuable Athlete awards, will run both the 100-meter (10.32) and 200-meter (20.46) event prelims at 5 P.M. and 6:45 p.m. (PT).
Later, Jake Arnold (18.79m) will throw the men's shot put at 5 p.m., and Abdihamid Nur (28:17.33) will headline the evening with the men's semifinal 10K race.
Thursday (Women)
Jade Kwinn (49.32m) will open Thursday's competition with the women's javelin at 12 p.m. (PT).
Later, the track events will begin with Bryn Morley (4:19.29) in the women's 1500-meter.
Meanwhile, Alyssa Colbert, who has taken the Big Sky by storm will compete in the women's 100-meter (11.36) and 200-meter (23.72) races at 5 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. (PT).
At 5:25 p.m. (PT) Miracle Onyemaobi (53.72) will run the women's 400-meter, followed by Maggi Congdon (2:06.32) and Melanie Loff (2:05.56) in the women's 800-meter run at 5:50 p.m. (PT).
Later, Jessa Hanson (33:13.14) will cap the night with the women's semifinal 10K race.
Friday (Men)
The men's semifinal triple jump and semifinal 5K will commence, while those who advanced to track quarterfinals will compete as well.
At 4 p.m. (PT), Sirr Butler (15.14m), Jack Normand (15.10m), and Mitchell Effing (15.45m) will compete in the men's triple jump, while Drew Bosley (13:42.32), Brodey Hasty (13:42.28), Jack Shea (13:44.57), and Nico Young (13:42.32) prepare for the men's semifinal 5K at 6:10 p.m. (PT).
Saturday (Women)
Those who advanced to track quarterfinals will compete, while the women's semifinal steeplechase, semifinal 5K, and semifinal 4x400-meter relay commence.
Nikita Moore (10:21.78) and Jenna McCaffrey (10:13.35) will run the women's steeplechase at 3:40 p.m., while Delaney Rasmussen (16:16.36), Annika Reiss (16:06.42), Meagan Van Pelt (16:11.69), Elise Stearns (15:55.43), and Jesselyn Bries (16:14.84) get ready for the 5K at 6:10 p.m. (PT), and LiNay Perry, Kyairra Reigh, Onyemaobi, Loff, and Congdon prepare for the women's 4x400-meter relay (3:39.05) at 6:45 p.m. (PT).
