Men’s Tennis Opens Season with Double Header on Saturday

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 20, 2023) - Both the Lumberjacks and the Arizona Christian Firestorm will open their Spring seasons on Saturday with a double header in Flagstaff. The matches will begin at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. MST, and are free for the public to attend.

The last time the two teams met on the courts was January of 2022, where the Jacks hosted a double header, bringing in a 7-0 victory followed by a 6-1 victory.

Arizona Christian is led by head coach Phil Carlisle, who is in his third season at the helm of the ACU Men's Tennis program. The Firestorm hold a 15-17 record with Carlisle, improving to 12-8 last season after a 3-9 2020-2021 season.

The Firestorm finished second in their conference last season, ending their season with a 4-0 loss to San Diego Christian. ACU returns Junior Martin Thomas, who went 12-6 in singles play last season, primarily playing at the No. 6 position, with two wins at the No. 4 spot, and one win at the No. 5 spot.

Jonas Wand also returns for the Firestorm, for his third season of play. Wand went 5-9 at the No. 2 spot for ACU last season. The Junior found success throughout fall ITA play, making it to the semifinal matchup of the ITA regionals tournament. 

The Jacks are returning Dominik Buzonics who earned All-Big Sky singles second team accolades after an impressive season at the No. 3 spot for NAU. Buzonics finished the 2021-22 season with a 17-9 singles record, finishing the season on a six match win streak. Buzonics was also honored by the conference with doubles partner Alex Groves for All-Big Sky doubles accolades. The duo went 18-8 with the best doubles record on the team, primarily playing in the No. 2 slot.

Groves led NAU in singles play, with a 19-7 overall record, primarily playing at the No. 5 spot. Maciej Ziomber closely followed with a singles record of 18-7, primarily at the No. 4 position.

Facundo Tumosa returns for his fifth year, after a 10-14 record at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in singles play last season. Tumosa was also honored by the conference, earning All-Big Sky doubles honors with now graduated Eban Straker-Meads, as the pair went 12-10 at the No. 1 spot.
