LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 10, 2023) – After another solid round of play at the Golf Iconic Classic, the Northern Arizona University golf team is tied for seventh after two rounds.
The Lumberjacks totaled 288 (E) strokes in the second round today after shooting 287 (-1) yesterday to bring the total to 575 (-1) heading into tomorrow's third and final round. It is the lowest two-round total for the Lumberjacks so far this season.
NAU is tied for seventh along with Boise State in the 16-team field. The teams are in action at the NMSU Golf Course (par-72, 6,420 yards), and for the second-straight day, all counting scores for the Lumberjacks were at par or better.
True freshman
Amy Hodgkins continues to lead the way. She is tied for 16
th with a two-round total of 143 (-1). After recording a 71 (-1) yesterday, Hodgkins shot a 72 (E) today and now has concluded six-straight rounds par or better.
Both
Ellena Slater and
Frankie Dezis have shot a 72 (E) in both rounds and are tied for 22
nd with identical scores of 144 (E). The total is a new career two-round low for Dezis, and Slater's 14
th career round at par or better.
After recording a 72 (E) yesterday,
Lizzie Neale shot a 74 (+2) today and will enter the third round tied for 32nd with a total of 146 (+2) strokes.
Lorel Hayward improved by 10 strokes today in round two, jumping from an 82 (+10) in the first round to a 72 (E) today for her second round at par or better this season, tying for 78
th.
Both
Nina Lukyanenko and
Ekaterina Malakhova are competing as individuals. After recording her first career round at par yesterday, Lukyanenko finished with a 77 (+5) today to tie for 46
th with 148 (+4) strokes. Malakhova also showed improvement from round one to two, with a 76 (+4) yesterday to a 74 (+2) today to tie for 61
st with 150 (+6) strokes.
Long Beach State continues to lead the field with 559 (-17) strokes. Entering the third and final round tomorrow, the Lumberjacks are just five strokes out of fourth place. NAU is the lone Big Sky Conference team in the competition.
