LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 9, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University golf team opened play today at the Golf Iconic Classic at the NMSU Golf Course (par-72, 6,420 yards) in Las Cruces, N.M. After the first round of 18 holes, the Lumberjacks are tied for sixth after shooting a 287 (-1).
Each player whose score counted in the lineup recorded a round at par or better, led by freshman
Amy Hodgkins' 71 (-1) to end the day tied for 15th. The total marked her fifth-straight round at par or better this season. Hodgkins had four birdies today to help secure her score.
Sophomores
Ellena Slater and
Lizzie Neale along with freshman
Frankie Dezis all shot a 72 (E) today to tie for 24
th. The round marked the fourth round at par or better this season for Slater, and the third for both Neale and Dezis. Additionally, Dezis recorded four birdies while Slater and Neale each had three.
Although she is competing as an individual, sophomore
Nina Lukyanenko recorded a career-low for 18 holes today with a 71 (-1), her first career round below par to tie for 15
th with Hodgkins.
Also competing as an individual is
Ekaterina Malakhova who is tied for 65
th after shooting a 76 (+4).
Lorel Hayward is in 92
nd place after shooting an 82 (+10).
The Lumberjacks are tied for sixth with San Francisco out of 16 teams. The 287 (-1) recorded today was the team's second-lowest round of the season. Heading into the second round tomorrow, NAU is one stroke out of fourth place and three out of third.
Long Beach State leads the way after shooting a 278 (-10) as a team. Northern Arizona is the lone Big Sky Conference team in the field.
Action resumes tomorrow (Oct. 10) at 7:30 a.m. Mountain Standard time with the second round of 18 holes. The third and final round will be played on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
