Box Score 2 LAS CRUCES, N.M. (February 14, 2023) - Northern Arizona Men's Tennis improved to 5-1 on the season today in New Mexico with a pair of matches against New Mexico State and Western New Mexico, earning two 6-1 victories.
The Jacks started their day with another double point victory, sweeping all three courts. Dominik Buzonics and Maikel De Boes paired up once again for doubles play, this time at the No. 1 spot, followed by Alex Groves and Piotr Galus at the No. 2, and Facundo Tumosa and Dani Torres at the No. 3. The three duo's took a quick 1-0 lead for the Lumberjacks after going 6-2, 6-4, and 6-1, respectively.
Moving on to singles, NAU was able to find victories on all courts besides the No. 1. Tumosa faced off against NMSU's Jordy Visser. Tumosa and Visser played a back-and-forth match as Tumosa suffered a slow start, dropping the first set 6-1. NAU's graduate student found his way back with a 6-3 second set victory, before falling in the third 6-2 as Visser reclaimed the match.
Galus earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position, where the sophomore faced Roko Stipetic. Galus was able to pick up his pace through the second set for the dominant victory after Stipetic kept up closely through the first set. De Boes had the most dominant win of the morning matches, as the freshman earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot against Itay Feigin.
Buzonics, at the No. 4 slot, took down Yehor Opanasenko after a 6-3 first set, the two went to a tiebreak in the second set where Buzonics claimed a 7-6 (7-4) win. Groves had a slow start at the No. 5, before the senior came back to earn a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Luca Fe D'Ostiani. Dani Torres returned to the No. 6 for a 6-2, 6-4 quick win to Patrick Lohmann.
The Jacks moved on to face the Western New Mexico Mustangs for an afternoon matchup, where NAU once again earned the doubles point, continuing the Jacks undefeated in doubles play streak this season.
NAU went with the same doubles lineup as Buzonics and De Boes pulled out a 6-1 victory, and Galus and Groves followed suit with the same score to secure the doubles point. Tumosa and Torres went to the tiebreak, earning a 7-6 (7-3) victory to close out doubles play.
Tumosa bounced back after his morning loss, seemingly quickly as he earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory. De Boes had a quick 6-0 first set at the No. 2 position, before falling 7-5, 10-5 through the next two.
Galus, Buzonics, and Torres closed out singles for the day with wins at the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5, respectively. Morgan Donovan filled in at the No. 6 earning and dominant and quick 6-1, 6-0 victory.
