SEDONA, Ariz. (March 19, 2023) – Northern Arizona University golfer
Ellena Slater defended her home course today, being crowned the individual champion at the Red Rocks Invitational at the Oakcreek Country Club (par-72, 6,200) in Sedona. Slater, a true freshman, shot a 70 (-2) in the third round to bring her 54-hole score to 212 (-4) to win the tournament by two strokes.
Slater shot a 69 in round one and a 73 in round two during the first day of competition. She earned five birdies today in the final round, including a birdie on 18. She is the fourth Northern Arizona golfer to win the Lumberjacks' home tournament, as NAU claimed individual medalist honors for the second-straight year after
Elle Kocourkova won last year.
As a team, NAU finished tied for seventh with California Baptist after shooting an 895 (+31) through 54 holes. The Lumberjacks saved their best round for last, shooting a 293 (+5) after shooting a 298 in the first round and a 304 in the second.
Navy took home the team title after shooting a total of 880 (+16), shooting one-over par today.
Aleksandra Chekalina was the next 'Jack, finishing tied for 33
rd after shooting a 226 (+4). She shot a 75 in both rounds yesterday and finished with a 76 today.
Lizzie Neale also tied for 33
rd with a 226 after shooting a 74 today, a 74 in round two, and a 78 in round three.
Nina Lukyanenko, playing as an individual, turned in a 226 as well. She shot a 76 in round one, a 72 in round two, and a 78 in round three.
Lorel Hayward played her best round of the tournament today with a 75 after shooting a 76 and an 82, respectively, in the first two rounds yesterday. She finished tied for 66
th with 233 (+3) total.
Ashley Croft finished tied for 78
th, also saving her best round for last with a 74 (+2) today. In all, she shot a 235 (+2) through 54 holes.
Ekaterina Malakhova, also competing as an individual, rounded things out by finishing tied for 95
th with a 243 (+12).
The Lumberjacks will return to action on April 3-4 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz.
