Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 29, 2023) — The NAU Men's tennis team lost a heartbreaker in the Big Sky Tournament Championships, coming down to the wire, in a 4-3 loss to the Idaho Vandals on Saturday morning.
The Jacks picked up the important doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3. Facundo Tumosa and partner Maikel De Boes picked up a 6-4 victory at the No.1, taking down Francisco Bascon and Matteo Masala. Alex Groves and Piotr Galus fell in a tiebreak at the No. 2 to Francisco Gay and Taiyo Kurata. Coming down to the final doubles match, Dominik Buzonics and Daniel Dillon pulled out the 7-6 tiebreak victory for NAU's first point of the match.
Buzonics brought in the Jacks second point of the match with the first singles victory as NAU's junior went 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 against UI's Kurata. Idaho's No. 1, Bascon, earned Idaho's first point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to NAU's De Boes. Shortly after, Dani Torres fell to Mario Duron at the No. 6 with a 6-2, 7-5 match.
The Lumberjacks earned their third point of the match with a victory at the No. 5 from Groves as the senior earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Tumosa forced a third set at the No. 3 after falling 6-0 in the first set, with a 6-4 second set before dropping the third 6-3. The championship title came down to a third set at the No. 2 as Idaho's Francisco Gay forced a third set after dropping the first to Galus. Gay won the match for the Vandals with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 score.
The Lumberjacks end the season with a 22-3 overall record, marking the team's best win percentage in program history.
