Day One Results
MARICOPA, Ariz. (April 3, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University golf team completed the first two rounds of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic today in 10th place. The Lumberjacks shot a 291 (+3) in the first round and battled strong winds in the second round, shooting a 312 (+24) to total 603 (+27) strokes for day one. The classic is being played at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club (par-72, 6,191 yards) in Maricopa, Ariz., and the third and final round will take place tomorrow morning with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
In a closely contested first day, NAU is only eight strokes out of third place. Among the seven Big Sky Conference schools competing, the Lumberjacks are second behind Sacramento State who leads the entire field after shooting a 579 (+3) in the first two rounds.
Aleksandra Chekalina is leading the 'Jacks and is tied for seventh. She shot even-par in the first round, her fourth round at par or better this season, and a 74 (+2) in round two to total 146 (+2) strokes.
True freshman
Lizzie Neale is tied for 17
th. She shot a new career 18-hole low of 69 (-3) in the opening round. It was her first-ever round in the 60's and her eighth round this season at par or better. After shooting a 79 (+7) in the second round, Neale totaled 148 (+4) strokes on the day.
Nina Lukyanenko shot a 73 (+1) in round one and an 81 (+9) in round two, shooting a 154 (+10) to place tied for 42
nd.
Ashley Croft is tied for 49
th after shooting a 155 (+11). She was consistent, shooting a 77 (+5) in round one and a 78 (+6), in round two.
Lorel Hayward rounds out the lineup, tied for 84
th with a 161 (+17) after shooting a 78 (+6) in round one and an 83 (+11) in round two.
Ekaterina Malakhova is competing as an individual and is tied for 99
th with a 166 (+22). She shot an 84 (+12) in round one before improving to an 82 (+10) in round two.
