SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 24, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University track & field teams began their competition at the NCAA West Regional today, with the men opening the weekend.
Colin Sahlman and
David Dunlap each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective events, with Sahlman competing in the 1,500-meter and Dunlap in the 200-meter.
Sahlman finished third in his heat of the 1,500-meter with a time of 3:50.17, earning him a spot in the next round on Friday.
Dunlap finished second in his heat of the 200-meter, running a time of 20.77 to earn automatic qualification to the quarterfinals. He also competed in the 100-meter, running a time of 10.42 and just missing out on a spot in the next round.
Kang Nyoak was NAU's second competitor in the 1,500-meter. Nyoak ran a time of 3:46.81 to just miss qualifying for the quarterfinals.
Wrapping up the track events for the Lumberjacks was
Cael Grotenhuis in the 10,000-meter. Grotenhuis finished 20
th in a stacked field, running a time of 28:47.16.
The 'Jacks had three competitors in the men's hammer throw this morning.
Garret Bernt was the top finisher, placing 28
th with a throw of 61.13 meters.
Desmond Lott and
John Murphy were not far behind in 33
rd and 37
th. Lott threw 60.46 meters while Murphy threw 59.94 meters.
In the javelin,
Trevor Hook threw 61.48 meters to place 33
rd overall.
Mitchell Effing was the final field competitor for NAU, placing 40
th overall in the long jump with a mark of 7.02 meters.
