Maddy Rey Receives Air and Space Forces Association Cadet of the Year Award

WASHINGTON (September 28, 2023) – After a season that saw senior Maddy Rey earn gold medals at the WAC Championships in both the 200 fly and the 400 IM, Rey's excellence outside the pool was rewarded this month as the senior traveled to Washington D.C. to receive the Air and Space Forces Association ROTC Cadet of the Year.

The award is given to the most outstanding junior cadet in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) region.

"Cadet Rey's achievements are remarkable," said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. and Det. 027 AFROTC Commander Matthew Stampher. "She has matched championship athletic performance with near-perfect academics while organizing national military events. She is a true leader and will soon shine as a military officer."

Rey was selected out of nearly 2,000 eligible candidates for this prestigious award.

"Maddy has excelled in the pool, the classroom, and in her ROTC obligations since she arrived on campus," Johns said. "She is to be commended for balancing everything and achieving at such a high level. We are very proud of her accomplishments and look forward to her senior year."

The senior from Columbia, Illinois, and the remainder of the Lumberjacks will be back in action for the blue vs. gold meet featuring Arizona Christian on Oct. 13.
