Men’s Tennis Hosts Western New Mexico in Home Opener

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 17, 2023) – Lumberjack Tennis (1-1) is back in action for a double-header to open the home slate of the schedule as NAU hosts Western New Mexico at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
 
The Jacks picked up their first victory of the season last weekend in Tempe with a 4-0 match against Wichita State, in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. NAU fell to ASU 4-0, to split the weekend and start the season with a 1-1 record. NAU Tennis will return home for the first time since April 15, 2023, marking 278 days in between home matches for NAU Men's Tennis. The Lumberjacks have won six-straight home competitions.
 
Last season the Lumberjacks picked up a 6-1 victory against the Shockers, earning the sweep for the doubles point and victories at the No. 1, and No. 3-6 positions. Returners, Piotr Galus, Dominik Buzonics, Dani Torres, and Morgan Donovan all earned two-set sweeps in their singles matchups.
 
Newcomer Semen Agynskyy earned his first career victory with the Jacks last week against Wichita State, in 6-1, 6-0 straight sets to the Mustang's Richey King. Maikel De Boes went 1-1 in singles play last weekend, picking up a straight-set victory to Marcelo Sepulveda with a 6-2, 6-4 match at the No. 4. Torres saw a successful weekend in both singles and doubles play, earning a sweep at the No. 2, the highest position he has played in his career at NAU, with a 7-6, 6-4 win to Wichita State's Misha Kvantaliani.
 
On the doubles side of things, NAU picked up 3 victories with Galus and De Boes earning a No. 3 victory in a 6-3 matchup against the Shockers. Torres and Maciej Ziomber went 2-0 on the weekend, earning back-to-back doubles victories against ASU and WSU, sweeping the Shockers 6-0 and earning the 6-4 victory to ASU's Jacob Bullard and Constantinos Koshis.
 
Western New Mexico has yet to play a spring match this season and will open their season against the Lumberjacks. The Mustangs went 5-10 last season, ending their season on a five-match losing streak. The Mustangs return three players, while adding three freshman to the roster in 2023-24.
