FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 24, 2023) – The Northern Arizona University track & field team are on the road this week as they split up to go to the John Thomas Terrier Classic and the New Mexico Team Open.
NAU will send multiple distance athletes to the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass.
Nico Young will compete in the 5,000-meter only a week after running the first sub-4 minute mile at 7,000 feet in NCAA history. Also competing in the 5K for the men will be
Theo Quax,
Aaron Las Heras, and
Erik Le Roux. They will compete Friday at 5:40 p.m. MST.
Competing in the women's 5K on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. MST will be
Alyson Churchill,
Aliandrea Upshaw, and
Meagan Van Pelt. Churchill competed in the 3,000-meter a week ago at the Lumberjack Team Challenge, finishing second with a time of 10:03.79.
Maggi Congdon will compete in the mile for the NAU women after running an NCAA best time in the event last week. Her time of 4:40.34 converts to 4:30.16 when adjusted for altitude to put her at first in the nation. Congdon will compete on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. MST along with
Karrie Baloga. Congdon and Baloga will also compete in the 3K on Saturday at 3:40 p.m. MST.
Colin Sahlman and
Kang Nyoak will run the men's mile on Friday at 1:20 p.m. Sahlman has the third fastest mile time in the nation after running a personal best time of 4:03.21 a week ago, while Nyoak is ranked 11
th in the nation in the event. Sahlman and Nyoak will also compete in the 3K on Friday at 3:40 p.m. MST.
The Lumberjacks will also send athletes to the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M. this weekend.
Madeline Wilson will be the sole women's sprinter traveling, with her competing in the 60-meter and the 200-meter. Wilson owns the school and conference record in the 200-meter after running a time of 23.29 last week. She will compete in the 200-meter on Friday at 9:00 p.m. MST and the 60-meter preliminaries on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. MST.
Khamis Hassan will compete in the 60-meter on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. and will compete in the 200-meter along with
Trenton Givens,
Joshua Anderson, and
Cannon Booker on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
Anderson and Booker will also compete in the 400-meter along with
Tyson Givens at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both Trenton and
Tyson Givens will also compete in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
NAU will send a men's 4x400-meter relay team to Albuquerque, with competition taking place on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Mitchell Effing will be the lone jumper traveling this weekend, competing in both the long jump and triple jump. Effing holds the school record in the triple jump after hitting a mark of 16.02 meters earlier this season. He will compete in the long jump on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and in the triple jump on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Competition will run both Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic and the New Mexico Team Open.
