FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 30, 2024) – Nico Young has been named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week following his NCAA record in the 5,000-meter.
Young ran a time of 12:57.14 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, with his time not only being a collegiate record but also the first sub-13 minute 5K to be run by a collegiate athlete. He is the top athlete in the nation in the event, as well as in the mile and 3,000-meter.
Young was previously named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week after running the first sub-4 minute mile at 7,000 feet in collegiate history. His time of 3:57.33 is the top time in the NCAA so far this season when adjusted for altitude to 3:48.71.
Young is the first back-to-back male athlete of the week since 2017. This is the second consecutive season that NAU has had a male athlete earn the honor during the indoor season, seeing
Drew Bosley win USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week last season after breaking the collegiate record in the 3,000-meter.
The Lumberjacks are back at home this week as they host the Ron Mann Classic. The meet will take place Feb. 2 at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. Stay up to date with NAU Cross Country and Track & Field by following us on Twitter and Instagram.
