FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Nov. 16, 2024) – The Northern Arizona women's basketball team is preparing for a quick trip out to Stockton, Calif., to face Pacific this Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. Mountain Standard time.
The Tigers compete in the West Coast Conference and are 2-1 on the year, most recently topping Long Beach State 81-65 on Friday night.
Northern Arizona also sits at 2-1 for the first time since the 2020-21 season. Last Monday, the Lumberjacks hosted Division II Fort Lewis for their home opener where they cruised to a 101-68 victory.
Pacific and the Lumberjacks clashed last season in Flagstaff and NAU ran away with the 96-65 decision. Northern Arizona is looking for its fifth-straight win over a WCC team after going a perfect 4-0 against WCC programs last season, scoring over 80 points in three out of the four victories.
Six players scored in double figures during the last meeting and five return for NAU this season in
Sophie Glancey,
Leia Beattie,
Allie Cummins and
Olivia Moran while
Nyah Moran added nine points. Northern Arizona hit 11 three-pointers and were plus-nine on the boards.
In Stockton, the series is tied 1-1 and NAU leads the all-time series, 4-2. Prior to last year's meetings, the two teams hadn't met since 2006, the last time Northern Arizona made it to the NCAA Tournament. Besides the first meeting in 1987, the Lumberjacks and Tigers met four times from 2002-03 to 2006-07 with NAU winning three out of the four.
The Tigers went on to finish 19-15 and 8-8 in WCC play last season, including a 12-5 record at home. Three players are averaging double figures, including Elizabeth Elliott who leads the team with 15.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Anaya James puts up 10.7 points, 6.7 assists, 4.7 steals and 6.0 rebounds per game. Pacific knocks down 46.1 percent of its shots, averaging 72.7 points per game while holding opponents to 64.3. The Tigers average 11.0 steals per game and are forcing 22 turnovers per contest.
For the Lumberjacks, five players score in double figures. Glancey is the reigning Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after earning two double-doubles and hitting a game-winner at New Mexico to open the year. Glancey is averaging a team-high 15.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, shooting 57.6 percent from the field.
Nyah Moran has scored 18 points in consecutive game to tie for the team leads with Glancey with 15.0 points per contest while
Taylor Feldman adds 14.0.
Leia Beattie leads the league in three-pointers made with eight while
Nyah Moran has made seven. Beattie is averaging 11.3 points per game and is dishing out 5.3 assists per contest which ranks second in the league.
Saniyah Neverson rounds things out with 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, scoring in double figures in two out of the last three games.
As a team, NAU is averaging 84.0 points per game and knocking down an average of 10.0 triples per game. The Lumberjacks rank 21
st nationally in assists per game with 20.0.
