PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 24, 2025) – The NAU Men's Tennis team is preparing to play in the Big Sky Tennis Championships. The Lumberjacks will play in their first match on Friday, April 25.
NAU entered the tournament as the one seed and grabbed a first round bye, all this thanks to an undefeated 8-0 record in the conference. They will take on the Idaho Vandals in the second round. The Vandals beat the Weber State Wildcats 4-2 in the first round.
NAU beat Idaho in Lewiston earlier this season, winning 6-1. This match had NAU take the doubles point with Dani Torres, Piotr Galus, Semen Agynskyy, Jakub Volesky and Mati Lange getting singles wins. In this match, Torres had a dominating performance as he beat Vandal senior Francisco Gay, 6-3, 6-1.
The Vandals entered the Big Sky tournament with a 5-3 record in the conference. Their three conference losses came against the Montana Grizzlies, NAU and The Idaho State Bengals.
Torres and Lange are both riding six match winnings streaks in singles, entering the matchup against the Bengals. Torres has a 15-4 record overall in singles and is 6-1 when it comes to in conference matchups. Lange is undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record. He is one of the four Lumberjacks that are undefeated in Big Sky matchups with the other three being Agynskyy, Volesky and Jakub Prachar.
NAU as an overall team is on a five match winning streak and were undefeated in conference play. The Lumberjack do have a losing record all time against the Vandals, but have won the last two matchups. The last time that these two teams met up in the Big Sky tournament, Idaho got the better of NAU and won in a narrow match, 4-3.
Last season the Lumberjacks made it to the Final but lost to Sacramento State. This season NAU is looking to go one step further and get their first NCAA tournament berth since 2021.
All matches at the Big Sky Tennis Championships begin at 8 a.m. and are played at the Phoenix Tennis Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
