LEWISTON, Idaho (April 6, 2025) – The NAU Men's Tennis team won the Big Sky regular season title after beating the Idaho Vandals 6-1. The win kept the Lumberjacks undefeated in conference play as they are 6-0.
The Lumberjacks kicked things off by winning the doubles point by winning two out of three matches.
Dani Torres and
Piotr Galus won on court one by just a single break, 6-4.
Semen Agynskyy and
Takumi Katsuda were able to get the second doubles win of the day, 6-3.
NAU took the momentum that they had from doubles into singles as they took five of the six singles points with Torres, Galus, Agynskyy,
Jakub Volesky, and
Mati Lange winning their matches.
Torres won in straight sets and picked up a bagel in the second set, winning by a scoreline of 6-3 and 6-0. Torres won all three of his matches over the weekend and moved his singles record to 13-4.
Galus and Agynskyy went the distance in their matches as they both won in three sets. Galus lost the tiebreaker in the first set, then rebounded to win the next two, 6(5)-7, 6-4, 6-3. Agynskyy also dropped the first set, then dominated the next two only allowing four games from his opponent as he won by the scoreline of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Agynskyy's win helps keep him undefeated in singles when it comes to conference matchups.
Volesky won at the No. 5 spot in the lineup in straight sets, picking up a breadstick on the way to victory, 6-1, 7-5. Volesky improved his singles record to 11-5 on the season.
Lange was victorious in straight sets in a close battle where each set was determined by one break, 6-4, 7-5. The freshman has now notched his seventh win as a Lumberjack.
NAU now has a record of 14-8 and has clinched a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tennis Tournament. The next match for the Lumberjacks is on Friday, April 11 in Flagstaff as they take on Sacramento State Hornets.
