NAU Balances National DMR Bid with Conference Preparation

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 18, 2026) - Northern Arizona Track & Field will conclude the 2026 indoor regular season with competition split between the University of Colorado Last Chance Meet in Boulder and the NAU Tune Up in Flagstaff. The two meets serve distinct purposes: Boulder provides a final opportunity for national-level qualification marks, while the home meet allows athletes to solidify conference positioning ahead of the Big Sky Indoor Championships.

At the University of Colorado Last Chance Meet, the men's distance medley relay (DMR) is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on Friday. Northern Arizona will be represented by Colin Sahlman, Tor Hotung-Davidsen, Josiah Johnson and Clayton Shively. Collectively, the quad enters competition with nationally competitive individual marks and the potential to produce a significant relay performance.

Sahlman has competed at an elite level throughout the 2026 indoor season. He recorded a time of 1:44.70 in the 800 meters at the Millrose Games, which ranks No. 1 in the NCAA this season and No. 1 all-time in program history. He also ran 3:52.30 in the mile at the BU Valentine Invitational, ranking No. 3 nationally in 2026. His range across middle-distance events and sustained consistency have positioned him among the top collegiate athletes in the country.

Hotung-Davidsen has demonstrated continued progression this season, running 1:47.89 in the 800 meters (No. 3 all-time at NAU) and 3:53.51 in the mile. Those marks place him among the Big Sky's top competitors and within competitive national standing. Shively reached a milestone earlier this month by breaking the four-minute barrier in the mile with a 3:56.96 performance at the Valentine Invitational, moving to No. 7 all-time in program history and No. 5 in the conference this season. Johnson has provided steady performances throughout the indoor slate, contributing reliability and competitive depth within NAU's middle-distance group. The DMR presents one final opportunity to combine elite speed and aerobic strength before postseason competition begins.

Northern Arizona's middle-distance depth is further reflected in the latest USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings. The men's 800-meter group ranks No. 4 nationally with a combined time of 7:11.05 and an average of 1:47.76. The unit is anchored by Sahlman's NCAA-leading 1:44.70, while Rheinhardt Harrison has added scoring strength with a 1:46.93 performance. Hotung-Davidsen's 1:47.89 continues his breakout campaign, and Ford Washburn provides key depth to round out the squad. The strength of the 800-meter unit is mirrored in the mile squad, where NAU ranks No. 2 nationally with a combined time of 15:36.29 and an average of 3:54.07. Sahlman leads the group at 3:52.30, followed closely by Hotung-Davidsen (3:53.51), Washburn (3:54.75) and Harrison (3:55.73), reinforcing the program's combination of elite speed and championship-level depth.

Simultaneously, the NAU Tune Up will be hosted at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome, with field events beginning at 12:00 p.m with men's and women's pole vault, separately long jump and weight throw at 1:00 p.m. and running events starting at 4:00 p.m. The meet serves as the final regular-season competition prior to the Big Sky Indoor Championships and offers athletes a final opportunity to secure qualifying marks and refine race execution in a controlled, home environment.

Historically, the Tune Up has functioned as a strong preparatory platform before conference competition. In 2025, Northern Arizona secured nine event victories and recorded two new top-10 marks in program history. Jordann Germain moved to No. 10 all-time in the 400 meters, and Kiki Vaughn advanced to No. 4 all-time in the 800 meters. Those performances illustrated the meet's role in generating momentum immediately prior to championship racing.

Together, the Colorado Last Chance Meet and the NAU Tune Up represent both a final evaluation point and a transition into postseason competition. Boulder emphasizes national qualification potential, while Flagstaff provides strategic refinement ahead of the conference championships.
