FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (March 13, 2026) - Northern Arizona captured the NCAA Division I men's distance medley relay national championship Friday night at the 2026 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships inside the Randal Tyson Track Center.
The Lumberjacks' relay of Rheinhardt Harrison, Josiah Johnson, Tor Hotung-Davidsen and Colin Sahlman won the national title in a season-best 9:19.95, defeating Arkansas (9:21.42) and Virginia Tech (9:21.69) in a tightly contested final. The victory marks the first NCAA Division I men's distance medley relay national championship in Northern Arizona program history.
Harrison set the tone on the opening 1,200-meter leg, delivering a strong 2:49.80 to position the Lumberjacks among the leaders early in the race. Johnson followed with a 45.83 split on the 400 meters to keep Northern Arizona in contention through the halfway point.
Hotung-Davidsen then ran 1:47.20 on the 800-meter leg, moving the Lumberjacks into the lead entering the anchor mile.
Sahlman closed the race with a decisive 3:57.14 mile split, separating from the field over the final laps to secure the national championship for Northern Arizona.
Earlier in the day, Hayley Burns advanced to the final of the women's mile after earning an automatic qualifying spot in the semifinal round. Burns finished fourth in her heat in 4:39.17 to claim one of the top-four automatic qualifying positions and secure a place in Saturday's national final.
Hotung-Davidsen also earned All-America honors in the men's mile final. Competing in his first NCAA Division I indoor season after transferring from Lynchburg, the senior finished 15th overall to earn Second Team All-American recognition.
The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude Saturday with Burns scheduled to compete in the women's mile final at 2:10 p.m. MST. Sahlman will also compete for the Lumberjacks in the men's 3,000 meters final at 4:25 p.m. MST.
