FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 17, 2026) – In a full day of competition that stretched from 7 a.m. into midnight, Northern Arizona track & field delivered a strong slate of performances across the Bryan Clay Invitational, Tom Jones Memorial and Pacific Coast Invitational on Friday, highlighted by elite marks in the middle distances and continued depth across event groups.
At the national level, Colin Sahlman continues to set the standard in the 800 meters, holding the NCAA's No. 1 time this season at 1:44.70 while ranking No. 7 all-time in collegiate indoor history. Tor Hotung-Davidsen remains among the nation's best with a 1:45.36 mark, ranking No. 5 in the NCAA this season and giving NAU two of the top performances in the country.
On the women's side, Hayley Burns delivered one of the top performances of the day, running 2:03.05 in the 800 meters. The mark solidifies her position as the Big Sky leader this season and places her among the top 20 in the NCAA. Ava Mitchell also added a strong showing at 2:07.06, good for Big Sky No. 2 and No. 11 on NAU's all-time list.
The Lumberjacks' 800-meter group continued to show depth as Aiden Barnhill ran 1:50.73, while freshman Jonah Fearnley recorded a personal best of 1:51.35.
Distance events highlighted NAU's efforts at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. In the 5,000 meters, senior Cael Grotenhuis led the way in 13:47.04, moving to No. 3 in the Big Sky this season. Junior Ethan Godsey followed at 13:49.98 (Big Sky No. 4).
On the women's side of the 5,000 meters, Ali Upshaw ran 15:42.76 to rank No. 3 in the Big Sky and No. 9 in program history, while Addie Engel followed at 15:52.77, moving to No. 5 in the conference and No. 12 all-time at NAU. Additional depth came from Nikita Moore (16:06.71).
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, redshirt freshman Tess Hannigan clocked 10:24.07 to move to No. 6 in the Big Sky this season and No. 11 in program history. Redshirt frosh Jackson Elliot also added a personal best of 14:56.46 in the 5,000 meters.
At the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida, NAU saw strong performances across the sprints and hurdles. Sophomore Shanye Harris posted an outdoor personal best of 24.19 in the women's 200 meters, moving to No. 13 in the Big Sky. Junior Blaise Nelson ran 21.65 in the men's 200 meters, maintaining his position at No. 10 in the conference.
In the hurdles, Josiah Johnson clocked 49.67 in the 400-meter hurdles, winning his heat and continuing his consistent run of sub-50 performances this season.
In the throws at the Pacific Coast Invitational, Northern Arizona continued to lead the Big Sky in the women's hammer throw. Senior Sariyah Horne-Kemp placed third with a mark of 58.85 meters (193-1), while sophomore Ronan Gallagher recorded a personal best of 56.75 meters (186-2), improving her conference-leading position as the duo currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the Big Sky this season.
The Lumberjacks will continue competition across three meets nationwide on Saturday, with distance, sprints, jumps and throws in action.
