FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (May 27, 2026) – The Northern Arizona men's track and field team opened competition at the NCAA West First Round with a strong showing in the middle-distance and hurdle events, advancing five athletes through the first round at John McDonnell Field.
In the men's 1500m, all three entered Lumberjacks advanced to Friday's quarterfinals. Rheinhardt Harrison won Heat 1 in 3:39.89 to earn an automatic qualifying spot, while Clay Shively advanced on time after running 3:41.22. Tor Hotung-Davidsen secured his spot with a third-place finish in Heat 3, crossing in 3:42.13.
Colin Sahlman added another qualifier for NAU in the men's 800m, handily winning Heat 2 in 1:47.11 to automatically advance to Friday's quarterfinal round.
In the men's 400m hurdles, Josiah Johnson continued his standout outdoor season by advancing with a second-place finish in Heat 5. Johnson clocked 50.83 to automatically qualify for Friday's quarterfinals. Nicolas Martinez also competed for the Lumberjacks, wrapping up his season at the NCAA West First Round.
NAU men return to the track Friday for the quarterfinal rounds, with athletes competing for spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
NAU women return to action Thursday with the women opening competition at NCAA West Regionals. Hayley Burns is set to compete in the women's 1500m at 4:30 p.m. MST, while Ali Upshaw and Addie Engel will race in the women's 10,000m at 7:10 p.m. MST. In the field events, Sariyah Horne-Kemp opens the day for the Lumberjacks in the women's hammer throw at 7:30 a.m. MST.
