FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 5, 2018) – Northern Arizona women's tennis junior
Chiara Tomasetti, the ITA Mountain Regional singles champion, will open serve at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships starting Wednesday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.
"Chiara will have the opportunity to compete against the best players in the country," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "She's excited and motivated and has been working hard. We're looking forward to seeing what she can do and hoping for a great finish to the fall season."
Tomasetti earned her way to the fall season concluding National Championships by dominating the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in mid-October. Tomasetti became the first player in program history to win the regional singles championship.
The Roesrath, Germany native was in complete control in winning seven matches in Las Vegas, bringing back the title to Flagstaff after dropping just one set at the Mountain Regional. Nine of her 14 set wins were by 6-0 or 6-1 scores.
Ranked No. 10 at the spring season's end in the region, Tomasetti was the regional tournament's No. 4 seed. Her run through the Mountain Regional Championships was just the latest during a highly successful fall season for the two-time All-Big Sky First Team singles selection.
Tomasetti has won eight consecutive matches heading into this week's National Fall Championships and is 15-2 in singles play this fall. She is a perfect 3-0 against nationally-ranked opponents, including two wins against No. 49 Aiwen Zhu of UNLV and a win over No. 80 Petra Hule of Florida State. The latter came at the ITA All-American Championships in late September.
In addition to her regional title, Tomasetti also won her flight at the UNLV Fall Invitational and placed second in her flight at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains tourney.
The main draw of the ITA National Fall Championships will start Wednesday and the tournament will run through Sunday.
