LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of Nevada – Las Vegas defeated the Northern Arizona women's tennis team 4-2 snapping its eight-match winning streak Thursday afternoon.
"We went toe to toe with a team who has been nationally ranked this season," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "We played great doubles and carried momentum into singles winning the first sets on three different courts. It just came down to a couple points here and there."
The Lumberjacks came out strong to start clinching the doubles point with wins from
Eirene Granville and
Cora-Lynn von Dungern 6-2 at the No. 3 position and
Hanneke Lodewijks and
Ellie Millard 6-4 at the No. 1 position.
Lodewijks and Millard increased their doubles record to 6-1, leading the 'Jacks, after today's performance against UNLV's nationally ranked No. 75 pair Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang.
"Congrats to those two for beating a nationally ranked doubles team," said Bogusz.
With the score 1-0 going into singles, the Lumberjacks continued their run with Lodewijks, Von Dungern and
Madi Moore winning their first sets against the Rebels.
Lodewijks then defeated UNLV's Izumi Asano 6-2, 6-4 to put the 'Jacks up 2-0.
Despite the strong effort, the Rebels came back to win at the No. 1, 5, 4 and 3 positions to clinch the victory and break NAU's winning streak.
Northern Arizona will travel to Cheney next to continue Big Sky action. Currently, the Lumberjacks are 8-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference at 3-0.
"We now have to regroup and we will be ready for Eastern Washington on Saturday," said Bogusz.
Following the match in Cheney, the 'Jacks will compete against Idaho to end a three-match week. Both matches against the Eastern Washington Eagles and Idaho Vandals are set for 10 a.m.
