FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A clean sweep for the Northern Arizona women's tennis team as it ends regular season conference action undefeated for the second year in a row after defeating North Dakota.
Northern Arizona has solidified a perfect run in conference action after notching their first Big Sky 7-0 shutout of the season against the Fighting Hawks. The Lumberjacks increase to 17-3 overall and 11-0 in Big Sky action with just one match left against Grand Canyon next weekend.
"Since the beginning of the season, it has been about the process," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "Every practice we focus on improving areas of our play and every match we look to implement them."
Northern Arizona dominated in doubles winning on every court before sweeping singles in a similar fashion.
Hanneke Lodewijks and
Ellie Millard paired to pick up their tenth win together with a 6-1 performance against UND's Elly Hartnett and Carmen Palumbo.
Chiara Tomasetti and
Madi Moore clinched the doubles point, for the fourth straight match, 6-1 against UND's Masha Lobanova and Zahra Finnigan.
The Lumberjacks continued their push with
Cora-Lynn von Dungern and
Eirene Granville notching their third straight doubles win 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
With the score 1-0, freshmen Millard and Moore finished 6-2, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively, to extend the lead to 3-0 before Granville's win-clinching 6-2, 6-1 victory against UND's Jaylee Yasunaga.
"Having a home crowd always gives us a lot of confidence going into a match," said Bogusz. "Hearing the cheers and seeing the fans, really elevates our performance. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us this season."
NAU's Tomasetti, Lodewijks and Von Dungern finished off the sweep for the 'Jacks increasing the winning streak to 33-straight regular-season victories.
The Lumberjacks will compete for the final time in the regular season against non-conference opponent Grand Canyon Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m.
"Playing Grand Canyon will get us ready for the Big Sky Conference tournament," said Bogusz. "We will have a chance to adapt to lower elevation and warmer weather."
Following GCU, the Lumberjacks will compete in the conference tournament in Phoenix as the No. 1 seed. The Big Sky Championships will take place April 26 through April 28 at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
