FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Northern Arizona men's tennis team garnered a 7-0 shutout over the Montana State Bobcats to remain undefeated at home.
The Lumberjacks increase to 9-10 overall and 7-2 in the Big Sky moving up two spots to land in second-place in the standings just three weeks before the conference tournament.
"Montana State is a tough competitor," Director of Tennis
Ki Kroll said. "We showed up, played well and competed as a team today."
Northern Arizona's
Lucas Taylor and
Chris Steele finished doubles first with a 6-1 score over MSU's Kasper Parlklo and Adrian Torrico. Doubles pair
Ruben Montano and
Sebastian Eguez then clinched the point 6-2 at the No. 3 position.
In singles, Taylor once again finished first for the third straight week with a 6-1, 6-2 win against MSU's Rok Sitar. The junior was followed by Montano, who garnered a 6-2, 6-4 win in his second week at the No. 3 position, and senior
Harun Ajanovic, who competed for the first time this season, clinching the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position.
"Everyone looked good," said Kroll. "We came out, tried our best and it's sinking in and finally coming together for us."
Eguez continued the momentum taking a 6-4, 6-1 win to push the score to 5-0, before both Handel and Steele finished off their matches 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 and 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(3), respectively.
Northern Arizona ended the weekend with a final 7-0 score defeating both Montana and Montana State this weekend. The Lumberjacks will have a little over a week now before taking the courts in Cedar City to compete against Southern Utah Monday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
With the just two conference matches left, the Big Sky Conference championship tournament is just in sight.
