OGDEN, Utah — For the third consecutive year, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team has clinched the regular season championship title after today's 6-1 win against the Weber State Wildcats.
So far this season, Northern Arizona has recorded an impressive 10-0 conference record and are 16-3 overall. The Lumberjacks will enter the Big Sky Conference championship tournament with a first round bye as the No. 1 seed.
"Weber State is a tough place to play," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "I'm proud of how we handled different situations in the match today. They trusted their game even when things were not going right at moments."
The Lumberjacks started with doubles winning at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions and leading on the final court before the point was clinched.
Starting with NAU pair
Eirene Granville and
Cora-Lynn von Dungern, the 'Jacks began another dominating performance to end a three-match week. The two defeated Weber State's Morgan Dickason and Emily Tanner 6-0 before
Chiara Tomasetti and
Madi Moore clinched the doubles point 6-2.
Northern Arizona went into singles 1-0 solidifying wins on the next three courts before the Wildcats could even get on the board.
After clinching the doubles point, Tomasetti carried momentum into singles finishing first 6-2, 6-4 against WSU's Caitlin Herb. Junior Granville followed shortly after defeating Dickason 6-1, 6-0 to put the 'Jacks just one point shy of their eighth straight win.
In the win-clinching match, freshman Von Dungern took WSU's Sara Parker to three sets with a final 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 score.
"Congrats to Cora Lynn for clinching the regular season championship for us," said Bogusz.
This was just Von Dungern's third win of the season.
NAU's Moore and Lodewijks finished it off for the 'Jacks winning at the No. 6 position 6-0, 6-3 and the No. 1 position 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.
"I think we surprised a lot of people with the results this season," said Bogusz. "Our returners are growing as leaders and we have amazing freshmen who have bought into the program since day one. This conference title is a result of their hard work, trusting the process and playing for each other."
Northern Arizona will host for the final time this season against North Dakota Friday, April 13. The match is set for 1 p.m. in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex and will be free for all who attend. The Lumberjacks will aim to defend a host of records; including their undefeated 6-0 home record, their 10-0 conference record and their 32-straight regular-season wins record.
