FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (May 11, 2018) – During Friday and Saturday's Spring 2018 Commencement Ceremonies, the Northern Arizona Athletics Department will have 60 student-athletes participate marking the culmination of their academic careers. A dozen of the 60 student-athletes will walk during this weekend's spring commencement exercises, but will complete their degrees during the upcoming summer term.
The Athletics Department held their annual student-athlete reception at Ashurst Auditorium Thursday evening where each graduate received their student-athlete stoles.
This year's graduation class has been champions in competition (27 conference championships), the community (188.75 service hours) and the classroom (3.29 cumulative GPA). They have represented the Lumberjacks in the NCAA Volleyball and Soccer Championships, competed on the NCAA regional championships and stood on the podium on the biggest of stages within the sport of track & field.
Of course, members of this class have also been integral in bringing two NCAA Cross Country National Championships to the Mountain Campus.
Starting with NAU's second consecutive Division I Men's Cross Country National Title, the 2017-18 academic year was another championship-filled season. The swimming & diving team remained at the top of the Western Athletic Conference, claiming their fifth consecutive title. Men's and women's cross country opened the fall by sweeping the Big Sky Championships, and then followed up by defending the Skydome in sweeping the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
The Lumberjacks' most recent hardware came courtesy of the women's tennis team's third straight Big Sky regular season title. The men's and women's outdoor track & field teams are currently in pursuit of conference titles in Moscow, Idaho with the championships wrapping up later on Friday.
NAU Athletics had three student-athletes receive the prestigious Gold Axe Award with
Alina Staffeldt (swimming & diving) and
Rene Coggins (women's basketball) being recipients this semester.
Alexa Geiger (swimming & diving) received the honor in the fall semester. Coggins went on to being named The W.A. Franke College of Business Distinguished Senior and one of the recipients of the President's Prize.
Staffeldt was one of three student-athletes, along with
Matt Baxter (cross country/track & field) and
Brooke Andersen (track & field), who were name the Golden Eagle Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
