LAS VEGAS, Nev. (September 23, 2018) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team's weekend trip to Las Vegas produced big winnings for the Lumberjacks, as they earned three championships on the final day of the UNLV Fall Invitational. Junior
Chiara Tomasetti produced a pair of the championships – one in singles and one in doubles – and earned a nationally-ranked win on Sunday to close competition at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
"It was a solid performance by our players again across the board," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "We took it a step further from last weekend and were able to get a few titles. It was a good weekend all-around."
In the Flight One singles championship match, Tomasetti responded from a first set loss to upset No. 49 Aiwen Zhu of the host school on her home court. Tomasetti battled her way to a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win to come away with the title – a week after falling short in her championship match at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains tournament.
Like Tomasetti, freshman
Emilie Haakansson also came away with a singles title following her own runner-up finish last week. Facing Long Beach State's Wiktoria Rutkowska in the final of Flight Four, Haakansson earned a 6-4, 7-6 victory allowing the 'Jacks to finish first in two of the five singles flights.
Tomasetti's singles win was not her only title of the weekend, as she teamed with senior
Hanneke Lodewijks to be the last team standing in the Flight One Doubles bracket. Tomasetti and Lodewijks defeated Natalia Munoz and Dominique Meyer of Long Beach State, 8-2, to complete a dominant weekend in which they dropped just seven games in three matches.
"Chiara beat a nationally-ranked player in the final and showed a very high level of tennis," Bogusz said. "Emilie was so tough and was able to pull it through. Finally Hanneke and Chiara playing together again, they stormed through the doubles draw as they're getting ready for next weekend at (ITA) All-Americans."
Their doubles win was just one of four NAU victories on Sunday as the 'Jacks went 4-0 in doubles play for the second consecutive day. Also playing in Flight One, sophomore
Ellie Millard and freshman
Adrianna Sosnowska picked up an 8-1 win over Charity Sagiao and Zoe Tanti of Southern Utah.
Haakansson also got the best of Rutkowska in doubles, as herself and sophomore
Cora-Lynn von Dungern defeated Rutkowska and Carlota Casasampere, 8-5, in Flight Two. Senior
Eirene Granville and sophomore
Madi Moore completed NAU's perfect day in doubles with an 8-4 victory over San Jose State's Alba Pedrero Galindo and Kristina Baran.
von Dungern fell in the Flight Five Singles championship match to UNLV's Alex Kalachova, 6-2, 6-3, but Lodewijks and Sosnowska did pick up singles wins before heading back to Flagstaff.
Lodewijks cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mathilda Vidgren of San Jose State, while Sosnowska defeated Daniela Cozzi of Southern Utah, 5-7, 6-4, 10-2.
With this weekend's success, the Lumberjacks will prepare for stiff competition next weekend at the ITA All-American Championships. The championships will start on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Malibu, Calif.
