MALIBU, Calif. (September 30, 2018) – Northern Arizona women's tennis junior
Chiara Tomasetti posted a 1-1 singles record in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships pre-qualifying round on Saturday.
Tomasetti bounced back from a first round loss to Pepperdine's Anastasia Iamachkine in three sets, but rebounded with her second victory over a nationally-ranked opponent of the fall in the back draw.
"Chiara battled hard against a solid player from Pepperdine," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "She had her chances, but came up just a little short of winning the match. We took some good things out of this match and identified areas where we need to improve and we were able to bounce back in the second match."
Facing Iamachkine on her home court on the Pepperdine University campus, Tomasetti was dominant in the second set. However, her efforts ultimately come up shy in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 opening loss of the championships.
However, Tomasetti responded in a convincing way in the nightcap as she knocked off No. 80 Petra Hule of Florida State, 6-2, 6-2, in the back draw. Her win over Hule, who was seeded second in the pre-qualifying round, was Tomasetti's second over a nationally-ranked opponent in less than a week after defeating No. 49 Aiwen Zhu of UNLV last Sunday at the UNLV Fall Invitational.
"Chiara showed some maturity in the second match," Bogusz said. "She had a great start and never let the other player into the match. She really took care of business. Now we are shifting our focus to doubles so we can be ready to go on Tuesday."
Tomasetti will now get ready for the start of doubles play in the qualifying round with senior
Hanneke Lodewijks. Tomasetti and Lodewijks will face off against Old Domination's pairing of Holly Hutchinson and Brooke Pilkington in the first round on Tuesday at 9 a.m. as the All-American Championships will shift to the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
