FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 31, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team will be back on the road this weekend as it heads to Salt Lake City, Utah to compete against the University of Utah in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 2.
The Lumberjacks are currently 1-0 on the season after taking down the University of Portland 4-3 on Jan. 26, while the Utes are 3-2 on the season.
NAU's first match of the 2019 season was a nail biter that saw the team fall behind 3-2, before winning the final two singles matches. The final match came down to the No 5. singles player
Facundo Tumosa, who was able to beat Issa Yoshida of Portland by a score of 7-6, 4-6 and 6-3.
"The guys did a great job last weekend as we were behind in the match and they showed a lot of resilience and experience to come back," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said.
Matchup
The University of Utah is currently riding a one-match win streak heading into the weekend. The win came against Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 26 by a score of 4-0.
In singles, the Utes' top player is Dan Little who is currently 2-2 on the season. Little entered the spring ranked the No. 95 singles player in the country. Both Russell Benkaim and Mathias Gavelin lead Utah in singles wins with three.
The Utes' top doubles pair is made up of Randy Cory and Benkaim, who holds a record of 4-1 on the season.
