FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 30, 2019) – With their fall season winding to a close, the Northern Arizona women's tennis heads south on the I-17 to Glendale this weekend for the GCU Invitational running Friday through Sunday at the Paseo Racquet Center.
"For most of our players, this will be their last tournament of season," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "We want to see them finish strong. It'll also be a dual format so our freshmen will be able to see what it's like to play next to their teammates and it'll be a valuable experience."
The Lumberjacks will be joined at the GCU Invitational by the host, Grand Canyon, as well as Big Sky rival Northern Colorado. Unlike the bracket-styled tournaments the team has played so far this fall, this weekend will be a dual match format with three doubles matches and six singles matches.
Sophomore
Adrianna Sosnowska and
Emilie Haakansson will lead NAU's contingent of seven players in Glendale this season. Sosnowska's 8-4 singles record this fall is second on the team to only senior
Chiara Tomasetti, who will be prepping for next week's Oracle ITA National Fall Championships following her regional singles title. Haakansson is third on the team with a 7-3 record.
Sosnowska and Haakansson were among a number of 'Jacks who posted positive results at last weekend's ITA Mountain Regional Championships. Sosnowska and Haakansson combined for five singles wins at the regional tournament, with freshmen
Elinor Beazley and
Mimi Bland also posting two wins apiece. The two freshmen have six wins each this fall.
The Lumberjacks' pairing of Sosnowska and Bland finished as the regional runner-up last week, tallying a 5-1 record during the five-day tourney in Las Vegas. They are pacing the Lumberjacks in doubles play this fall with a 7-2 record overall.
"We were in it together every match last week," Bogusz said. "They were supporting each other every match, whether it was a regional final or a back draw match, and that is a coach's dream to see."
