NAU Soccer Falls in Big Sky Quarterfinal Overtime to Northern Colorado, 2-1

Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 6, 2019) – In the quarterfinals at the Big Sky Championship, Northern Arizona University women's soccer played its final match of the 2019 season after falling to Northern Colorado, 2-1, in overtime.

"Extremely tough loss to take after a controversial call on the winning goal but I absolutely couldn't be prouder of this team!" head coach Kylie Louw said. "Our players and our team rose from every single challenge we faced this year.We came out strong tonight and unfortunately there has to be a winner, tonight it wasn't us. Credit to a tenacious UNC."

A shot by Tatum Heeres in the fourth minute of the game began the 'Jacks lead in shots to the Bears. Heeres was the first to force UNC's goalkeeper, Ashley Franza, to make a save just ten minutes in. In the first half, NAU outshot its opponent 5-3.

To open up the second half, the Bears connected three minutes in with a goal from Taylor Bray. Despite UNC's quick score to start, The Lumberjacks did not allow the Bears to keep their lead for long, scoring in the 60th minute to tie the game 1-1. Kayla Terhune's first season goal kept Northern Arizona afloat for the rest of the regulation.

After a deadlock through the first 90 minutes, NAU again led UNC in shots 9-8 (4-3 SOG). Taryn Benham recorded two saves while Franza had three.

Despite the effort the Lumberjacks made, Lexi Pulley for Northern Colorado scored the golden goal three minutes into the first ten.

With the loss, NAU will finish the year with a record of 8-8-3 and a conference record of 4-4-2, ranking No. 5 in the Big Sky. Madison Montgomery led the 'Jacks in goals at seven, with Paige Maling trailing closely behind at five. Both Montgomery and Maling were awarded with the Big Sky Conference Second Team honors, while Carly George was named to the First Team. The Lumberjacks will return next season with both honorees of the Second Team.

"The experience we gained is unparalleled," Louw said. "I'm honored to have a role with these young ladies and I cannot wait to get on the field with them again. They give their hearts to this program. We will miss our seniors greatly but they have left some very big shoes to fill and I know we have players eager to fill them."
