Northern Arizona Goes 0-2 Against Utah on the Day

Handel has a big day despite the Lumberjacks loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (February 2, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team fell to Utah 6-1 and 5-2 in a doubleheader on Feb. 2 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The two losses will now push NAU to 1-2 on the season, while Utah moves to 5-2

"The guys competed very hard against the tough Utah team," NAU head coach Maciej Bogusz said. "We gave ourselves many chances and we were able to pick up some wins.Although we haven't converted our efforts on all the courts, I feel like we are on the right path and these matches make us closer to where we want to be in the future."

In the first match of the day, the Lumberjacks fell down 1-0 to the Utes after losing two of the three doubles matches.  The 'Jacks lost the No. 3 and No. 2 matches, with the No.1 remaining unfinished.
In singles, the Lumberjacks lone win came from Tim Handel in the No. 1 position.  In Handel's match, he was able to take down No. 95 Nationally ranked singles player Dan Little. Fellow 'Jacks Tom Fisher and Facundo Tumosa were both able to push their matches to three sets before ultimately falling to their Utes counterparts.

In the second match of the day, Northern Arizona fell behind again 1-0 after losing the doubles point. NAU did have a better result in doubles as Handel, and Ruben Montano were able to win their match against Russell Benkaim and Joe Woolley by a score of 6-4. Unfortunately for NAU neither the No. 2 nor No. three duos could pull out a win.

In singles, the 'Jacks were able to take two out of the six singles matches. Once again Handel was able to win the No. 1 singles match against David Micevski by a score of 6-7, 7-6 and 10-7.  This win now moves Handel to 30 in singles on the year in the No. 1 position.  Handel's dominance at the top will be a key for Northern Arizona's success moving forward.  The other win in singles came from the No. 6 spot, where Montano was able to defeat Woolley in three sets with the score of 7-6, 3-6 and 10-7.

"Special congrats to Tim for his great performance in the No. 1 spot and going undefeated on the weekend," Bogusz said.

Northern Arizona will be back in action on Feb. 10 against San Diego State. The 'Jacks will be looking for a win to push them to 2-2 on the season.
