Northern Arizona Makes it Three in a Row as it Takes Down Montana State 5-2

NAU advances to 3-0 in conference play

Box Score BOZEMAN, Mont. (March 10, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team extends its winning streak to three matches as the team takes down Montana State 5-2 on March 10.  In the win, the Lumberjacks were able to win two doubles matches to seal a point, and four singles matches.

The win against the Bobcats moves NAU to 6-6 on the season and 3-0 in the Big Sky, while the loss moves Montana State to 1-8 on the season.

"The team being able to perform for two days in a row, in two different conditions, makes us really proud," NAU assistant coach Filip Kanczula said.  "We were able to endure, bring the energy to the level that carried us to those two wins.  It wasn't easy, but we managed to find it in us and that, ultimately, is what our sport is all about- you come out, play hard, and with a little bit of luck, you find a way to win."

The Lumberjacks got on the board first as they were able to win the doubles point against Montana State. Northern Arizona won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, while the No. 1 doubles remained unfinished.  The No. 2 doubles was won by Chris Steele and Tom Fisher, with a score of 6-2. The point was sealed in the No. 3 doubles match where Lucas Taylor and Facundo Tumosa won 6-2.

In singles, the 'Jacks won the No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No.6 matches against Montana State.  Following the doubles point, NAU was able to increase its lead to 2-0 when Tim Handel was able to win the No. 1 singles point over Montana States Alexander Flink 6-4 and 6-2.  The win moves Handel to a 9-1 record in singles on the season, which not only leads NAU but also the Big Sky.  Following Handle's win, Tumosa was able to win the No. 4 singles match over Christian Damgaard Qvist by a score 7-5 and 6-3.

Although being just one point away from a win, the Lumberjacks lost the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches to cause the match to go to 3-2.

The 'Jacks ended up sealing the victory by winning the No. 6 singles match. In the No. 6 singles, Fisher took down Montana State's Mateus Ceolin by a score of 6-2 and 6-3.  After winning the match, NAU was able to secure another point as Ruben Montano won the No. 5 singles match.
