FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 28, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team will be looking to expand upon its seven-match winning streak as it heads on the road to take on the University of California Davis on March 29 and Sacramento State on March 30. The Lumberjacks are currently 10-6 on the season and 6-0 in the Big Sky. Although the 'Jacks started off slow out of the gate, the team is currently on a seven-match winning streak that began on March 2 against Southern Utah.
"Everyone is working really hard, and our recent results show the progress team is making as the season goes on," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "We are getting closer to playing our best tennis this year."
In singles, the Lumberjacks top player is
Tim Handel, who both is NAU's No. 1 player but also leads the teams with a 13-1 record. The 13 wins not lonely leads the team, but also leads the Big Sky, with the next closest person having 11.
In doubles, the Lumberjacks top duos are
Lucas Taylor and
Facundo Tumosa and
Tom Fisher and
Chris Steele, who both have nine wins. Northern Arizona's doubles have been a crucial part of the team's recent success as over the seven-match winning streak, the Lumberjacks have won all seven doubles points.
Matchups
UC Davis will enter the March 29 matchup with a 9-5 record on the season. UC Davis is coming off of an impressive 4-2 win over Yale on March 14.
In singles, the Aggies have seemed to have some trouble at the No. 1 position as both David Goulak and Ivan Thamma have shared the position with a combined record of 4-8 on the season. The team's player with the most singles wins on the season is Nil Giraldez who is currently 8-3 on the year, while mostly player the No. 2 and No. 3 position.
The Aggies have found success in doubles as in the spring the team has one 62.8 % of its doubles points. UC Davis' top pair is made up of Goulak and Thamma, who are 10-2 in the spring.
Sacramento State will be entering the March 30 match with a record of 5-9 on the season while being 3-1 in the Big Sky.
The Hornets top singles player is Mikus Loseberg, although both Hermont Legaspi and Joannes Gjerdaker lead the team with eight wins. Legaspi has played anywhere between the No. 2 and the No. 5 position on the season, while Gjerdaker has played anywhere from the N. 3 to the No. 5.
Sacramento States No. 1 doubles is made up of Louis Chabut and Losebergs who have a record of 6-3 in the spring. The Hornets No. 2 pair of Josh Snowdon-Poole and Donald Hall also have six wins as well on the season.
