Box Score MISSOULA, Mont. (March 9, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team was able to pick up a 7-0 win over Montana on Mar. 9 in Missoula, Mont. The win marks the second straight win for the Lumberjacks and moves them to 2-0 in the Big Sky and 5-6 on the season. With the loss, Montana will move to 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
"I am proud of our guys, we were very professional in our practices and preparation to the match, when we take care of the things we can control we are a very solid team," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "Montana is a well-coached team; this is a good win for us."
NAU was able to score the first point of the day against the Griz by taking the doubles point. The Lumberjacks were able to win both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while also having the lead in the No.3 doubles that was unfinished. Northern Arizona's No. 2 pair of
Chris Steele and
Tom Fisher were able to start of the day with a win for the 'Jacks. The duo took down Oisin Shaffrey and Max Korkh by a score of 6-2. The Lumberjacks No.1 doubles team of
Tim Handel and
Ruben Montano were able to seal the point by taking down Alex Canellopoulos and Ed Pudney 6-1.
The Lumberjacks momentum in the match continued to singles where the team won all six matches. The first singles match win for NAU was
Facundo Tumosa, the No.4 singles player. Tumosa took down UM's Pudney with a score of 6-3 and 6-3. Following the No. 4 singles match, Handel was able to win his eighth singles match of the season over Canellopoulos 7-5 and 6-3. Northern Arizona sealed the victory when
Lucas Taylor was able to win the No. 2 singles over Korkh 6-2 and 6-4. With the match won, the Lumberjacks were able to pick up the last three singles matches of the event. The No. 3 singles match was won by Steele by a score of 7-6 and 7-6, while Fisher was able to win the No 6 singles with a score of 6-1 and 6-4. The final singles match of the day to finish was Montano, who won the No.5 singles match over Shaffrey.
Looking Forward
Northern Arizona will be back in action tomorrow Mar. 10 in Bozeman, Mont. as the team takes on Montana State. The Lumberjacks will be going for their third straight victory.
