Box Score Phoenix, Ariz. (April 26, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team will be advancing to the finals of the Big Sky Championship after taking down Idaho State 4-0 in the semifinals. This is the first time that NAU will be in the finals since 2015.
"I thought we played better as the match went on today," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "It feels good to have this one under our belt. Our energy in singles was incredible."
The Lumberjacks started the match with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. After the 'Jacks No. 2 doubles team fell to the Bengals, the 'team was able to rally back and win the No. 3 and No. 1 matches. NAU's tandem of
Facundo Tumosa and
Lucas Taylor were able to win the No. 3 doubles match 6-4, while the Lumberjacks No. 1 tandem of
Tim Handel and
Ruben Montano were able to come back from a 4-5 deficit to win the match 7-5 and clinch the doubles point.
The Lumberjacks were able to keep the momentum from doubles and win the first three singles matches to seal the 4-0 win. NAU's Tumosa was able to start off singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 3 position. Following the freshman's win,
Tom Fisher was able to win the No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-4 to expand the lead to 3-0. With being just one point away from sealing the win, Montano was able to clinch the victory by winning the No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-2.
Looking Forward
Northern Arizona will be back in action on April 26 in the finals of the Big Sky Championship against Portland State at 8 am MST.
"We are ready for a battle tomorrow," Bogusz said. "Guys worked very hard all season long to put themselves in this position; it is time to take it."
This will be the second meeting between the two teams, as the Lumberjacks won the first match 7-0 on March 24.
