Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 3, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team win its tenth straight match of the season as it takes down the University of Delaware by a score of 6-1. The ten consecutive wins tie the program's record for the longest winning streak set in 1982.
"The match prepared us for the conference matches this weekend," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "I'm glad we were able to rebound in doubles and showed lots of improvement since last week."
With the win, NAU moves to 13-6 on the season and remains 7-0 in the Big Sky. The seven wins has already allowed the Lumberjacks to lockup a spot in the Big Sky Tournament at the end of the season. The loss now moves the Blue Hens to a record of 13-10 on the year.
The Lumberjacks took an early lead in the match as they were able to take the doubles point. In doubles, NAU won the all three doubles matches. The first pair to win their match was
Tim Handel and
Ruben Montano as the No. 1 doubles pair. The two seniors took down Delaware's James Wilkinson and Justice Jones 6-2. Following the No. 1 pair, the 'Jacks won the No. 3 doubles match 6-3. This marked the tenth win of the season for
Facundo Tumosa, and
Lucas Taylor is doubles. Although already sealing the point, Northern Arizona's
Tom Fisher and
Chris Steele won the No. 2 doubles 6-4.
Riding the momentum from doubles, NAU was able to win the first three singles matches to seal the win. The first match to finish was Tumosa at the No. 4 position, where he beat Milo Nagle 6-2 and 6-0 to expand NAU's lead to 2-0. Following Tumosa's win, Fisher was able to win the No. 5 singles over Nathan Benyowitz 6-1 and 6-1. With a 3-0 lead, and just being one point away for their tenth straight win, Handel was able to secure the win at the No. 1 position, after beating Delaware's Wilkinson 6-1 and 6-2. This marks Handel's 16th win on the season.
After sealing the win the Lumberjacks fell in the No. 6 singles before winning the No. 3 and No. 2 singles to win 6-1. In the No. 3 position was Steele, who won his match over Blaise Casselbury 6-3 and 7-6. Taylor was able to finish off the match with a win for the 'Jacks at the No. 2 position.
Looking Ahead
Northern Arizona will be back in action against Weber State and Eastern Washington at home on April 6 and 7. The Lumberjacks will look to keep their winning streak alive.
