TUCSON, Ariz. (September 22, 2019) – After three long days at the Wildcat Invitational, the Northern Arizona University men's tennis team heads back to Flagstaff with eight wins out of their 11 double matches played.
"Overall it was a good weekend for us," head coach Maciej Bougsz said. "It was great to see everyone back on the court competing."
After losing the initial match against San Diego State University's Roensdorf and Scemancenco, the duo of
Facundo Tumosa and Eban Straker-Mead were placed into the consolation bracket, where they excelled. In their second match, they found themselves playing and beating GCU's Frank and Mueller, entering into the semifinals. Arizona's Hassey and Sakagawa played a tough match against Tumosa and Straker-Mead, but the NAU team was able to crank out two more game wins, going 5-7. The pair won in their consolation finals, beating New Mexico's Bermejo and Dobai 6-4.
David Nguyen and
Mikael Purne went into the finals match against San Diego State University after winning two straight matches, going 6-3 against Northern Colorado's Exstead and GCU's Kirsch, followed by a 6-4 win against Arizona's Horwood and Olsen. The pair ultimately lost to SDSU's Traxler and Auffray, who went 6-1 in their two previous matches.
Due to his opponent pulling out of the match, Purne won his singles draw.

Groves faced Northern Colorado's Pudney, winning 6-0 and 6-4, entering into the semifinals. There, he played New Mexico's Curnier, falling to two close sets of 6-4 and 6-4.
