HONOLULU, Hawaii (January 11, 2020) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team battled through another wet day in Hawaii, but all eight of their players managed to complete the final day of the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Saturday. As they did on Thursday, the 'Jacks picked up two wins apiece in singles and doubles action to conclude the first weekend of the spring season.
After rain wiped out Friday's competition, NAU – along with Hawai'i, Washington State, Louisville and BYU – returned to the courts on Saturday. Freshman
Mimi Bland won both her singles and doubles matches to complete an undefeated tournament in Hawaii.
Bland and sophomore
Adrianna Sosnowska won their second match of the weekend in doubles play to begin the day. The 25th ranked pair in the country dominated the Hawai'i tandem of Nikola Dolakova and Petra Melounova, 6-2. The duo was the only Lumberjack doubles team to win both of their matches this weekend.
NAU received a second doubles win on the day as sophomore
Emilie Haakansson and freshman
Elinor Beazley defeated Louisville's Raven Neely and Diana Wong, also by a 6-2 score.
In singles play, Bland bested Maddie Egan of Washington State, 6-1, 6-4. Both of Bland's singles wins this weekend came against Power Five opponents following her day one win over Maia Haumeuller of Louisville on Thursday.
The Lumberjacks' second singles win of the day came courtesy of junior
Madi Moore, who completed her unfinished match from Thursday. Moore pulled out a second set tiebreaker to defeat Washington State's Jovana Knezevic, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Senior
Chiara Tomasetti, Sosnoswka and Beazely all dropped tough three-set singles matches to opponents from Washington State, while Haakansson fell short in a two-set tiebreaker to Emilee Astle of BYU in other singles matches.
With the five-team invitational behind them, the 'Jacks will open their dual schedule next Sunday, Jan. 19 at Arizona State in Tempe at 2 p.m.
