BU DAVID HEMERY VALENTINE INVITATIONAL RESULTS
BOSTON, Mass. and Seattle, Wash. (February 15, 2020) – As dominant as the Northern Arizona men's distance team has been the last four years, Saturday night was nonetheless incredible as seniors
Geordie Beamish and
Tyler Day and junior
Luis Grijalva put together a statement performance in the men's 3000m.
Running at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, the three Lumberjacks finished first, third and fifth overall – and were the top three collegiate finishers – in the 3K. In fact, they were the only three collegiate runners in the top 14 times.
Grijalva was the first runner in the NAU gold to cross the finish line with a time of 7:43.73, placing first overall and smashing his previous best by almost 12 seconds. Grijalva also broke Diego Estrada's school record of 7:44.63 set in 2012.
Beamish was right behind Grijalva with a time of 7:44.67 and Day came in at 7:45.70. All three Lumberjacks set new personal-bests with Beamish running more than 12 seconds faster than his previous best time and Day shaving nearly 16 full seconds off his best time.
With the goal of posting NCAA Indoor Championship qualifying times, the trio did that and more on Saturday. With their performances, Grijalva, Beamish and Day rank first, second and third respectively in the country this season.
Furthermore, Grijalva (sixth), Beamish (seventh) and Day (12th) all cracked the all-time collegiate top 15 in the men's 3000m. NAU is now the second program with three different men in the all-time top 15.
The personal-bests were not limited to Boston as a host of Lumberjack distance runners posted noteworthy results on the final day of the Husky Classic in Seattle.
Freshman
Theo Quax placed second overall in the men's mile with a new collegiate-best time of 3:58.13, which also ranks him 11th in the country as of Saturday. He was one of three NAU men to post new personal best times in the mile as senior
Cade Burks (4:00.49) and freshman
Caleb Easton (4:06.16) also ran their fastest mile times.
In the women's mile, redshirt freshman
Bryn Morley lowered her Big Sky leading, and personal-best time, time to 4:46.35. Junior
Pipi Eitel's time of 4:48.61 was also a new collegiate-best, while freshman
Annika Reiss (4:54.32) and sophomore
Abby Riordan (4:57.13) ran sub 5:00 for the first time in their careers.
To round out the Husky Classic results, sophomore
Melanie Loff moved up a spot to second in the conference in the women's 800m. Loff dropped two and a half seconds from her altitude-converted time two weeks ago to clock 2:10.41 in the 800m on Saturday.
The NAU track & field teams will host their final home meet of the season, the NAU Tune Up, next Friday in the Walkup Skydome. The meet will also be the Lumberjacks' final before the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
